recycling info

All residents in the Village of Island Lake are able to participate in the seasonal yard waste program. Village of Island Lake residents may choose between two options to dispose of yard waste. Yard waste disposal differs depending on the trash level program you are on (single family, senior customers or townhome customers). The subscription program includes an LRS cart. You can also elect to use Village of Island Lake Yard Waste sticker on an approved personal container or yard waste bundle. Please read below for more information on accepted materials and on the program, you are on.

Yard Waste Season

Yard waste collection takes place on a seasonal basis, starting April 1st, and ending on November 30th each season.

What is considered yard waste?

Yard waste, also known as landscape waste, consists of organic waste materials accumulated as the result of cultivation and maintenance of gardens, lawns, shrubbery, trees and vines.

Yard Waste Subscription Program

Yard waste carts are available in 95-gallon cart size with subscription rates. All Island Lake customers are eligible to enroll in subscription yard waste services (regardless of your trash program).   Residents who use the LRS carts for yard waste and organics do not need to purchase stickers for the materials placed inside the carts. Yard waste placed outside of the LRS yard waste cart requires one sticker for each container/bag. Subscription yard waste is billed on a monthly basis.  You can enroll in the subscription program no matter what program you are on.

 Yard waste subscription annual rate

  • 95-gallon cart = $5.00/mo

Townhomes

If not enrolled on the subscription program, all townhomes are allotted up to 15 bags/bundles of yard waste per week during the season. Each bag or bundle requires 1 sticker to ensure service. Please read below for more information on stickers.

Single family homes/Senior customers

If not enrolled on the subscription program, single family homes on the regular curbside program and senior customers may place 15 bags of yard waste per week with no sticker needed on the first 15 bags. Anything outside the initial 15 bags requires 1 sticker to dispose.

Yard Waste Sticker

The Village of Island Lake Yard Waste Sticker is used for Yard waste containers, biodegradable landscape (yard waste) bag, or tied and secured bundles of brush. Each bag, container or pile requires one sticker (please read above for information on your specific sticker requirements).

Christmas Trees

During the first two weeks of January, we will begin to gladly collect your non-artificial Christmas trees as organic material – free of any tinsel, ornaments or lights.  Trees can be left loose (never in bags) in the area where you have regular service for trash and recycling.  Due to snow and ice, trees may not always be picked up on your service day as our drivers and trucks will be in the village all month for pickups.

“Bulk Items” are items that are too large to fit into a cart or can. LRS will collect one bulk item per week at no charge. If a bulk item is deemed hazardous, unacceptable for landfills or weighs more than 50lbs, that item will not be taken. Please schedule a special pickup with LRS for these types of items. Any additional bulk items requested to be serviced on the same day, must be prescheduled and prepaid to LRS at $35.00 per item.

Examples of a bulk or large item exceeding the capacity of the LRS refuse (garbage) includes the following; bed frame, box spring (bed), bicycle, chair, love seat/sofa, one part of sectional couch, mattress, frame or wall picture, or a toy. These are only some examples as there are many items that may be considered a bulk item.

For health and safety reasons, mattresses must be wrapped in plastic to be collected. Plastic mattress wrap can be found at local grocery stores, hardware stores, storage and moving outlets. If using loose plastic, it must be completely taped and secured on all corners with no exposure to the mattress.

Bulk items requiring special equipment and additional labor, such as a piano, sofa sleeper (couch with pull out bed) and large entertainment center, and construction debris are considered a Special Refuse Collection.

Call LRS if you are not sure if an item requires additional labor or equipment at 847.381.9300 or send a request with a photo of the item(s) by e-mail to Service@LRSrecycles.com

Oakwood Hills

Village of Oakwood Hills: Solid Waste & Recycling Collection

LRS provides Oakwood Hills with services for garbage, recycling and yard waste. LRS offers many other services for Oakwood Hills residents including an electronic waste event, organic food scrap compost service, free community drop-off sites, portable restrooms, and large, open top construction style containers. We are proud to be a partner in your community!

For more information on the required scheduling collection for specific items or material types, please click on one of the tabs below.

Thursday is the service day in Oakwood Hills. All garbage, recycling and yard waste will be collected between the times of 7AM and 6PM on your collection day. Service times are subject to change.

Oakwood Hills residents may select between two different program options for garbage collection. Both program options come with a recycling cart for collection of recyclable materials. For more information on the programs offered, please read below.

Limited Program

This service option is available to all residents included within the village. One (1) 65-gallon waste cart will be supplied for weekly collection services. Collection is limited to the items contained inside the LRS bin, anything placed outside the cart will be left.

Unlimited Program

This service option is available to all residents included within the village and is the default option to all new residents. One (1) 95-gallon waste cart will be supplied for weekly collection services. This program option has unlimited collection.

Residents may use personal containers for any extra refuse that doesn’t fit inside the LRS issued cart. Non-LRS containers may not exceed 35-gallons or 50lbs when full. Resident owned containers must also be watertight and have two (2) handles. LRS is not responsible for damage to personal carts as they are not compatible with our equipment.

Residents utilizing this program have the option of renting an additional garbage cart for a monthly fee. Please contact LRS to do so.

Any requests for changes in services should be communicated to LRS customer service.

LRS provides one cart for recycling at no charge for each household. Recycling is serviced on the same day as trash and on a one truck pass. The same truck that services your trash, has a split body to collect recyclables as well. Additional recycling carts are available upon request to customer service. Contact LRS customer service for more information or with questions regarding recycling.

  • Recyclables are collected on the same day of the week as the garbage and yard waste
  • You are to use the LRS issued cart first for recycled materials
  • There is no limit to the amount of acceptable recyclable items that can be placed out for collection, provided they are properly prepared and contained
  • LRS suggests using a cardboard box as a makeshift bin and placing all broken down materials in the ‘bin’ if needed
  • Please MARK the additional box or container used as RECYCLE so the driver can clearly see it
  • Plastic bags with recycling material will not be accepted
  • Shredded paper is not considered recyclable material, please contact the customer service department for further disposal options

Yard waste is collected seasonally beginning on April 1st through November 30th on the same day as garbage and recyclables. LRS also allows for organic food scraps to be mixed into yard waste during the season as well.

During the first two weeks of January, LRS will collect non-artificial Christmas trees (free of any tinsel, ornaments or lights) as organic material.  Trees can be left loose (never in bags) in the area where you have regular service for trash and recycling.  Due to snow and ice, trees may not always be picked up on your service day as our drivers and trucks will be in the village all month for pickups.

Following the first two weeks of January, Christmas trees are taken as bulk items. Please read below for additional information regarding bulk item collection.
