DeKalb Refuse, Recycling & Yard-Waste Collection Program

LRS provides weekly collection of garbage, recycling and yard waste service for DeKalb homes. LRS is a privately-owned company headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois with locations throughout the Midwest.

 

LRS offers many other services for DeKalb residents including electronic waste and household hazardous waste home collection, organic food scrap compost service, portable restrooms and large, open top construction style containers. Click on tab(s) below to learn more.

Collection Days for Garbage, Recyclables, Yard Waste/Accepted Food Scraps:

  • Wednesday, Thursday & Friday  
  • All items need to be placed at curb or alley by 6:00AM

There is no limit to the amount of containerized garbage that can be placed out for collection as long as it is containerized and properly prepared. 

  • LRS provides each home with one 95-gallon cart for garbage
  • LRS provides carts in 35-, 65- and 95-gallon capacity
  • LRS issued cart is to be used before placing materials into a non-LRS container
  • Non-LRS containers may be used for excess waste or recycling materials

    • May not exceed 35 gallon and 50 pounds when full
    • Must have two handles

Accepted Recyclables 

Paper

  • Remove metal cops and rings, notebook spirals, three-ring binders, and industrial size staples
  • Envelopes with cellophane windows are accepted
  • Newspaper and inserts
  • Magazines, catalogs, and phone books
  • Office paper, notebooks, computer print outs, hanging file folders, pastel colored sticky notes (no fluorescent), glossy brochures, index cards, greeting cards, stationery, fax paper, manila folders & envelopes
  • Junk mail
  • Chip & paperboard: cereal, cracker, tissue, shoe, gift, 6/12-pack boxes, paper towel tubes, egg cartons
  • Cardboard boxes must be flattened and cut

Steel/Tin Cans

  • Empty and rinse, labels may be left on

  • Metal paint cans and lids (must be empty and dry, some dried paint residue is fine)

Yard Waste collection begins April 1st through November 30th each year. LRS will collect an unlimited quantity of properly prepared and containerized acceptable yard waste materials every week. Yard waste needs to be properly prepared in accordance with the yard waste guidelines as described in this section.

 

What is Considered Yard Waste?

Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, branches and brush and other yard and garden trimmings, vines, garden plants and flowers, weeds, tree droppings (pinecones and crabapples) and other similar organic waste materials accumulated because of the cultivation and maintenance of lawns, shrubbery, vines, trees and gardens.

 

Organic Food Scrap may be mixed in with yard waste April through November.

Organic Food Scraps Accepted: bread, cereal, coffee grounds, dairy, eggshells, eggs, fruits, grain, pasta, shells, and vegetables

 

Unacceptable materials include sod, dirt, artificial Christmas trees, wreath greenery, garland (not considered yard waste)

 

Yard Waste and Food Scrap Collection Guidelines

  • Use minimum 2-ply biodegradable landscape waste, paper bags not to exceed 50 lbs.
  • Biodegradable bags may be used not to exceed 35 gallons, 50 lbs., when full
  • Resident-owned containers may be used but are subject to the cart lift mechanism which may damage retail store brand containers
    • Resident-owned containers may not exceed 35 gallons
    • Must be marked with large “X” or “YW” or “YARD WASTE”
  • Tie brush bundles with biodegradable twine not to exceed 4’ long, 2’ wide & 50 lbs.

RENT LRS YARD WASTE / FOOD SCRAP CART ON WHEELS WITH FLIP TOP LID

  • 65-gallon – $3.00 per month
  • 95-gallon – $5.00 per month

 

Christmas Trees

LRS collects Christmas Trees on collection day the first two weeks of January

  • Tree must be real (not artificial) and preferably cut down to under 7’ long
  • Trees will not be collected if frozen to the ground
  • Tree must be bare, free from plastic bags, tinsel, lights, ornaments, shiners, glitter, wire, plastic
  • No charge for collection during the first two weeks of January
  • After January 15th, prepayment and prescheduling is required

Bulk items are things too large to fit into your LRS cart or approved container. Examples of bulk items include a bed frame, box spring (bed), bicycle, chair, love seat/sofa, one part of sectional couch, mattress, frame or wall picture and toy.

 

LRS collects one bulk item per week for no charge.

  • Items exceeding 50 lbs. may require a special pick-up
  • Additional bulk items may be collected for $25.00 per item prepaid.
  • Items deemed hazardous will not be accepted
  • Bulk items requiring special equipment and additional labor require a special pickup.
    • Examples: piano, sofa sleeper, couch with pull-out bed, large entertainment center, construction debris

Mattresses and Box Springs – Plastic Mattress Wrap Required  

  • A mattress and box spring are each considered one bulk item
  • For health and safety reasons, mattresses and box springs must be individually placed in plastic mattress covers or securely wrapped in plastic to be collected
  • Plastic mattress wrap can be found at local grocery stores, hardware stores, storage and moving outlets
  • If using loose plastic, it must be completely taped and secured on all corners with no exposure to the mattress

DeKalb homes with LRS garbage & recycle cart service may submit a request for a special collection of any of the Electronic Waste (E-Waste) items listed below.

  • Requests are required to be submitted through our “schedule e-waste pickup” button in the top right-hand section
  • LRS collects electronic waste (E-Waste) on the first full week of every month on the regularly scheduled pick-up day for homes registered for pickup
  • E-Waste must be placed at the curb no later than 6 a.m.

E-Waste Collection Guidelines

E-waste should be separate from the refuse (garbage), recycle and yard waste containers in a noticeable location so they are easily identifiable for the driver.

  • Place small E-Waste at the curb in a brown paper bag, a 24” x 24” x 24” or small cardboard box.
  • Please mark the box as E-WASTE.

Special E-Waste Items

TV’s or computer monitors weighing over 100 pounds or larger than 60 inches must contact LRS. These may require special equipment and labor.

 

Items not accepted with E-Waste collection  

Appliances, air conditioners, ballasts, bare CRT tubes, capacitors, dehumidifiers, household batteries (AA, AAA, D, C, Lithium), light bulbs, liquids, microwaves, salvaged units, smoke detectors, vacuum cleaners, VHS cassette tapes and medical equipment (any material that is considered or has come in contact with biohazard or radioactive material).

LRS offers City of DeKalb homes a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Home Collection during the months of April through October of each year.

 

  • Residents who live in an incorporated City of DeKalb home, currently receiving LRS residential cart services are eligible to participate.
  • Collections are requested online or by calling LRS and available from April through October.
  • Collection dates are scheduled directly with each resident after submitting a request. You will receive an email or phone call with the scheduled date and more information shortly after submission.

How to Submit a Request

LRS has a simple process to submit a request using the LRS Household Hazardous Waste Request Web Portal in the top right-hand section of the webpage.

  • Online request form provides a list of items to select from, clear instructions and information regarding the collection
  • You can also call LRS at 844.633.3577 or email Service@LRSrecycles.com
  • After your request is received and scheduled, a kit will be mailed containing clear, thick, plastic bags with a reminder of accepted items and confirmation of your collection date.

Some appliances require special handling as they may contain harmful chemicals, or they need to be recycled at a special location.

Scheduling Removal of Appliances & White Goods

All appliances/white goods must be prescheduled to LRS by calling or emailing customer service prior to service day.

If you are unsure of any items that may require service, contact LRS at 844-633-3577 or send an e-mail with a photo of the item(s) to Service@LRSrecycles.com. Items requiring additional labor and/or equipment to manage are a Special Refuse Collection. LRS provides special pick-ups or special collections for large amounts of garbage from a move-out or a flooded basement or large clean outs.  LRS will provide a cost estimate if we are able to provide the service.  LRS does not guarantee collection of every item.

DIY Construction

Home remodeling waste includes, but is not limited to drywall, plywood, paneling, lumber, doors, windows, cabinets, porcelain fixtures, sod, fencing, concrete, or rocks will require special pickups. Residents will need to schedule service for these items and call to receive instructions on how to best prepare them for collection. Estimates will be provided, and items will be charged by the yard.

 

Dumpster Services

LRS has expanded our temporary services division to create an easier customer experience. These temporary services include portable restroom rental and dumpster roll-offs of all sizes to contain your construction debris.

Holiday service will be provided one day later than regular collection if the holiday falls Sunday through Friday. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, service will not be affected.

Cart Cleaning

Fill the cart with hot water and a capful of vinegar or grease-cutting dish soap. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse. Once the cart has been thoroughly rinsed, set the cart out with the lid open in the sun to dry.

 

Cart Replacement  

Carts that are broken due to damage incurred during the collection are reported by the driver for replacement at no charge. Residents are encouraged to contact LRS if they notice damage to the cart during the collection process to request a replacement cart.

 

If damage occurs to the cart due to other reasons, please contact LRS to request a replacement cart.

 

Latex Paint

Latex paint is considered regular garbage, but it must be completely dried.

  • Dry latex paint by leaving lid off or open and/or mix kitty litter until the paint is completely absorbed
  • Do not place out for collection until the paint is completely dry

Alkaline Batteries

Alkaline batteries are considered regular garbage and should be thrown into the garbage. It is always recommended that tape be used on each end of the battery and placed into a plastic sandwich bag when disposing of them.
